Community Awareness: Understanding the Impact of Opioids and Substance Abuse

The Peachtree City Rotary Club recently welcomed Dr. Carolyn McDermott to speak about substance abuse, fentanyl, prevention, and the impact addiction can have on young people and families.

Drawing from her years as a counselor in the Fayette County School System, Dr. McDermott shared insight into the challenges communities face with substance abuse and the growing dangers of fentanyl. She also discussed her work with The Beyond Fentanyl Project, her advocacy for fentanyl education, and her participation in national discussions focused on prevention.

Her presentation directly supports the Peachtree City Rotary Club’s opioid community awareness and prevention efforts. Education is an important part of prevention, and informed conversations help Rotarians better understand these issues and share that knowledge throughout the community.

Dr. McDermott’s message also reinforced that addiction affects more than one individual. Families, schools, first responders, employers, and entire communities can be impacted. Increasing awareness and supporting prevention efforts are meaningful ways Rotary can help address this broader challenge.
